Website Traffic Increased

If you've noticed a sudden increase in your website's traffic after installing Bot Badger, don't worry! We're here to help you understand what might have gone wrong and how to fix it. In this guide, we'll explain why too much traffic can be a bad thing in this situation and what you can do about it.

Understanding Increased Website Traffic
Normally, when you add Bot Badger to your website, you expect to see a drop in the number of visitors. This drop is a good thing because Bot Badger is designed to spot and remove fake visitors called bots. Bots don't help your website—they just mess up your data.

However, sometimes the opposite happens, and you see an increase in website traffic. This usually means that Bot Badger wasn't installed correctly, and there's a problem to address. There are two issues that can cause this to happen:

Issue #1: GTM or GA4 Loading Tags Are Still Present
To fix the issue of increased website traffic, you need to uninstall the previous version Google Tag Manager and/or Google Analytics. Step 6 in our "[Adding a Domain to Bot Badger](/en/article/adding-a-domain-to-bot-badger-17xr9bi/)" will walk you through the process.

Once you've done these steps, Bot Badger should start working correctly, and your website traffic will be back to normal.

Issue #2: Multiple Instances of Bot Badger Installed
It is also possible to create this situation if Bot Badger is installed in multiple places. A quick way to check is to right-click on a web page and select "View Source". Then, do a search (CONTROL+F or COMMAND+F) for checker.botbadger.com. You should only have one instance on the page. If you have more than one instance, you will want to confirm you did not add the Bot Badger tag script to multiple overlapping templates and be sure that you either using the 1) manual install or 2) the word press plug-in, but not both.
